The decision to start a journal was taken at the 1977 Annual General Meeting:it was to be funded through the members' subscriptions. The name chosen for the new journal was Stair (Irish for "History").

The first edition of Stair appeared in 1978 under the editorship of Elma Collins who retained that position until 1997.

The CEC then nominated Dermot Lucey, the present editor, to the position.

In his capacity as editor of Stair, Dermot looks on the journal as a resource for History teachers. He believes it is a forum to provide ideas, provoke discussion and thought and a help for new and more experienced teachers in their job. He hopes to see a more expanded Stair in future, with emphasis on the teaching of History to all ages and levels.
